DIY CAMERA

The BiYKi camera is a build it yourself kit camera designed primarily for kids. This was my thesis project for my degree in Product Design in DIT. The final prototype was a working film camera which could be easily assembled with no glue or special tools required bar a screwdriver.

The form of the camera developed from ergonomic research into the size, shape and grip of children's hands. Alongside the prototype was manufacturing specifications and costing for production, primary and secondary market research and initial research into various camera technologies.

The final prototype was built using 3D printed ABS finished with a custom mixed pearlescent lacquer and silicone vacuum moulded grips made using a cnc mould. The internal action was created using two off-the-shelf springs and the lens was a focus-free lens salvaged from a used disposable camera, from which the optics for the viewfinder were also taken.
